What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is primarily described as hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, more specifically, the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and joints. The purpose of Massage Therapy is to prevent physical dysfunctions and pain of soft tissues to develop, maintain, rehabilitate, or augment physical function, or relieve pain. Its treatment has a therapeutic effect on the body by its effect on the muscular, nervous, and circulatory systems.

How does Sport Massage Therapy differ from
'Regular' Massage Therapy?

Sport Massage Therapy is often geared to professional, competitive, or recreational athletes but, can also be an effective treatment for patients with non-sports-related injuries, chronic pain, or limited mobility. Rather than focus on the whole body, the massage therapist focuses on the areas of the body that are affected by the physical demands of training or competing. Massage techniques are applied within a specific time frame with the purpose of enhancing performance and decreasing potential for injury. This therapy provides the physical support needed for an athlete to pursue and achieve their goals.

By understanding the nature of your sport and its effect on the body, we can help create a treatment plan that can help make your athletic efforts more successful.
